States of Matter
Second Grade - Creekside Elementary
This is a lesson that incorporated the use of student-led centers. The lesson focused on the changes between the states of matter. We completed three different centers, one that focused on changes from solid to a liquid, one that focused on a liquid to a gas, and one that focused on a liquid to a solid.
Destruction of the Habitats
Fifth Grade - Turner Woods Elementary
This game was a part of a lesson on the fifth grade standard that covers the impact that humans have on the environment. It focused in on the destruction of beach habitats and the impact that it can have on sea turtles. For the game, students rolled a dice onto the board, and based on the letter that they landed on, they pulled a matching card. The cards had scenarios that would cause them as a turtle to either "die or keep living" until the next round. Once we completed the game, the students listed ways in which we, as humans, help and hurt the beach environments.
Modeling writing
Kindergarten - Blandy hills elementary
While in my placement in kindergarten at Blandy Hills Elementary, we incorporated a large amount of modeling throughout the day. One of the activities that we incorporated included modeling writing. This process changed throughout the year as we increased the difficulty as students started to master the process. To start off, we would require words or phrases to describe the images that they drew, and that would later progress to multiple sentences, and it often included a specific topic to illustrate and write about.
Earthworms for science:
Living and nonliving organisms
Kindergarten - Blandy Hills Elementary
One of the lessons that I implemented focused on the standard requiring students to understand the characteristics of living and nonliving things. To do this, we used earth worms and gummy worms and we observed them like scientists do. We also filled in charts with the characteristics that we observed for each, and then we were able to compare and contrast the earth worm to the gummy worm. This helped students to make connections between the characteristics of living and nonliving things.
Parts and Needs of a Plant
Kindergarten - Blandy Hills Elementary
This lesson is one that focuses on the parts of the plants and also the needs of plants. At the completion of the lesson, students were able to illustrate a plant or flower, label it's parts, and write sentences to describe at least one part of a plant and at least one need. This lesson that is easily differentiated to meet the needs of students.
Family Literacy Project
Kindergarten - Blandy Hills Elementary
This was a lesson that was implemented with a small group of students. The ultimate goal of this lesson and activity was to give parents the opportunity to get more involved in their student's learning. To implement this activity, I sent home a packet that included a book that was picked for their student, directions, and materials to use for the activity. The parents were asked to sit down and have their students read the book to them. Next, the activity incorporated a choice board of activities that parents could choose from to complete for the book that they read with their student.
